Timeline of the Writing Prophets

In this study, we step away from our series on the parables to begin a foundational look at the Writing Prophets of the Old Testament. To truly understand their messages, we must first understand the world they lived in and where they fit in the history of Israel.

We walk through a chronological timeline, starting from the earliest records of Moses and Joshua through the era of the kings with Samuel and Solomon, and finally into the core period of the major and minor prophets.

Key topics we cover include:

  • The Pre-Exilic Prophets: An overview of Amos, Jonah, Hosea, Micah, and Isaiah, who warned of the coming Assyrian captivity.
  • The Major Prophets: Understanding the roles of Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel as they prophesied before, during, and after the fall of Jerusalem to Babylon.
  • The Post-Exilic Prophets: Looking at Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi, who encouraged the remnant that returned to rebuild the temple and the walls of Jerusalem.
  • The 400 Years of Silence: The period between the last of the Old Testament prophets and the coming of John the Baptist.

By mapping out these overlaps and historical milestones, we can better appreciate how God’s message was consistently delivered across a thousand-year span. Join us as we build the framework necessary to dive deeper into the individual books of prophecy.
