Overview of Amos

In this study, we continue our series on the prophets by diving into an Overview of Amos. Likely the earliest of the writing prophets, Amos was a simple sheep breeder and tender of sycamore fruit whom God called to deliver a message of judgment to the Northern Kingdom of Israel.

We explore the historical context of his prophecy, including the mention of a massive earthquake that occurred during the days of Uzziah—an event so significant it was remembered for generations.

Key themes we discuss include:

  • Judgment on the Nations: Why God held the surrounding kingdoms of Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon, and Moab accountable for their cruelty and lack of pity.
  • Israel's Social Injustice: God’s specific charges against Israel for oppressing the poor, selling the righteous for silver, and perverting justice into "wormwood".
  • Religious Hypocrisy: How the people remained very religious through sacrifices and feasts while their hearts were far from God and full of greed.
  • The Conflict with Amaziah: The priest of Bethel's attempt to silence Amos and the prophet’s fearless response.
  • A Vision of Hope: The beautiful conclusion of the book where God promises to "raise up the Tabernacle of David", a prophecy of the church and the inclusion of the Gentiles.

Ultimately, Amos teaches us that God hates injustice and that true worship must be paired with righteousness and a genuine concern for others. Join us as we examine how this ancient message still speaks to our lives today.
