The Latter Days

In this study, we dive into the biblical expressions "the latter days" and "the last days." These phrases appear frequently throughout the prophets and the New Testament, often sparking questions about their meaning and timing. We explore how these terms are used and discover that their specific meaning is almost always determined by their context.

We examine several ways these expressions are used in Scripture:

  • Personal Future: How the "latter days" can simply refer to later in an individual's life, as seen in the wisdom of Proverbs.
  • Captivity and Return: Prophecies in Deuteronomy and Ezekiel that use these terms to describe Israel’s exile and their eventual restoration to the land.
  • The Messianic Age: The most common usage, referring to the coming of the Messiah and the establishment of His kingdom (the Church), as prophesied in Isaiah, Micah, and Daniel.
  • The Gospel Era: How New Testament writers like Peter, Paul, and the author of Hebrews used these terms to declare that they were already living in the "last days" inaugurated by Christ.
  • General Future Events: Examples from Genesis and Daniel where the terms describe specific tribal futures or the period of historical "silence" before Christ's birth.

Join us as we learn that while these phrases always point to the future from the perspective of the writer, they aren't limited to a single end-of-the-world event. Instead, they invite us to trust in God's plan for the "latter days"—whenever they may be.
