Overview of Isaiah (part 2)

In this second part of our overview of Isaiah, we conclude our study by looking at chapters 34 through 66. This section of the book shifts focus toward themes of comfort, redemption, and the future glory of God's kingdom, while continuing to warn against the folly of idolatry.

We walk through the major sections and prophecies, including:

  • Judgment and the Highway of Holiness: God’s fury against the nations and the beautiful promise of a road for the redeemed where "sorrow and sighing will flee away."
  • Historical Interlude (Hezekiah): We recount the dramatic siege of Jerusalem by the Assyrians, God’s miraculous deliverance of the city, and Hezekiah’s illness and recovery.
  • Comfort for God’s People: The shift in chapter 40 toward a message of comfort, including the prophecy of John the Baptist preparing the way for the Lord.
  • Cyrus the Shepherd: God names Cyrus the Great long before his birth, ordaining him to rebuild Jerusalem and the foundation of the temple.
  • The Suffering Servant: A deep dive into the profound prophecies of Jesus Christ—His rejection, His substitutionary death for our transgressions, and His ultimate victory.
  • True Worship vs. Hypocrisy: God’s explanation of why he didn't hear the people's fasting—because they lacked justice and mercy toward one another.
  • The New Heavens and New Earth: The vision of a restored creation where God’s people rejoice and the wolf and the lamb lie down together.

Through Isaiah, we see that while there is "no peace for the wicked," there is an everlasting covenant and boundless mercy for all—including the Gentiles—who turn to the Lord.
