Overview of Lamentations

In this study, we explore the book of Lamentations, a collection of five acrostic poems written by Jeremiah following the destruction of Jerusalem. While Jeremiah’s primary work was prophetic, Lamentations is an inspired funeral song—a raw, honest mourning over the consequences of sin and the collapse of a nation.

We walk through the distinct structure and themes of these five poems:

  • The Abandoned City: A look at Jerusalem portrayed as a lonely widow, betrayed by her "lovers" (allies) and finding no comfort because of her rebellion against the Lord.
  • The Lord as an Enemy: Understanding the somber reality that it wasn't just Babylon, but the Lord Himself who "bent His bow" and "poured out His fury" due to the people’s persistent iniquity.
  • Jeremiah’s Personal Suffering: A focus on the central poem where the prophet shares his own affliction, yet delivers the famous words of hope: "Great is Your faithfulness; Your mercies are new every morning."
  • The Horrors of the Siege: A sobering look at the extreme starvation and desperation within the city walls, where even "compassionate women" were driven to the unthinkable.
  • A Prayer for Restoration: We conclude with the captives' plea for God to "turn us back to You," recognizing that while they are disgraced, the Lord’s throne remains forever.

Join us as we learn that even in the depths of suffering and discipline, there is a path toward repentance and the steadfast hope of God’s mercy.
