Fruit of the Spirit: Gentleness

In this study, we continue our series on the Fruit of the Spirit by examining gentleness (or meekness). Using Galatians 5:22-23 as our text, we explore how true gentleness is not a sign of weakness, but rather "power under control" used for the benefit of others.

Key themes discussed in this lesson:

  • Gentleness vs. Weakness: Understanding that true gentleness comes from a place of strength and power, just as Paul could choose to come with a rod or a spirit of gentleness (1 Corinthians 4:21).
  • Restoring Others: How we are called to restore those caught in sin with a spirit of gentleness, maintaining humility and recognizing our own vulnerability to temptation (Galatians 6:1).
  • Handling Conflict: The importance of gently reproving those who oppose us in hopes that God may grant them repentance (2 Timothy 2:24-26).
  • Defending the Faith: Why Peter commands us to give a defense for our hope with "gentleness and respect" to put slanders to shame (1 Peter 3:15-16).
  • Wisdom from Above: Contrasting the world's selfish ambition with the wisdom from above, which is pure, peace-loving, and gentle (James 3:17).

We are reminded that gentleness is something to be pursued and practiced. It involves setting aside the "demonic wisdom" of harshness and tricks, and instead relying on the power of the Word of God to reach hearts.
