Attitudes Toward Benevolence

In this session, we begin a deep dive into the subject of benevolence, focusing specifically on the attitudes we must have as individual Christians and as a local congregation. We explore how helping those in need is not just an exception to the rule, but a fundamental part of the Christian life.

In this video, we discuss:

  • The Heart of Generosity: Why God desires a "wide-open hand" rather than a hardened heart, as seen in the principles of Deuteronomy 15.
  • The Example of Job: Looking at a righteous man who considered it a sin to withhold food, clothing, or comfort from the fatherless and the widow (Job 31).
  • Wisdom in Giving: Exploring the Proverbs that teach us how scattering leads to increase and how "lending to the Lord" through pity on the poor brings divine repayment (Proverbs 11, 19, 22, 28).
  • True Fasting and Worship: Understanding Isaiah 58, where God explains that the worship he chooses involves sharing bread with the hungry and housing the cast out.
  • Rich Toward God: Jesus’ warnings against laying up treasure for ourselves while ignoring the needs of others (Luke 12), and his call to "sell what you have and give alms."
  • Urgent and Necessary Needs: How we must learn to maintain good works to meet pressing needs—such as food, clothing, and shelter—so that we are not unfruitful (Titus 3, Ephesians 4).

We emphasize that while the church has specific roles and limitations, the foundation of all benevolence is the individual’s desire to imitate the sacrificial love of God.
