History of Church Division Over Institutions

We look at a very short history of the Restoration Movement and the involvement of Alexander Campbell in that movement. We look at both the good influence and the bad and take note that while we follow the foundational ideas he preached and wrote about (following Jesus only, through the Bible only), that is because that is what Jesus and the apostles taught, not be cause it is what Campbell taught.

In this lesson, we look at the history of division over institutionalism in South Africa. When did it happen and what was the cause? What are some principles that were ignored when the division happened?

In this lesson, we look at churches handing over their work to the oversight of another church. What scriptural principles are involved? How do some try to establish authority for it and why are those arguments not a proper use of the scripture?

Why did many churches filled with children of God end up dividing over churches supporting orphan homes, colleges, etc.? Why did some object to churches “doing their work” through these other organizations and turning over the oversight of the work to an institutional board? We briefly look at some of these ideas in this lesson.

In this lesson, we look at some fundamental principles that are involved in the division that occurred in the 1950s and 1960s over churches supporting or operating organizations (institutions) separate from the church. There are also some other related problems, like church benevolence to those who are not Christians and “sponsoring churches.”
