Canon of Scripture

How can we trust that we have the right books in our Bibles? What is the standard used to determine which books should be considered authoritative in our lives?

Fundamental Principles
In the series: Canon of Scripture

In this lesson, we look at some fundamental principles that are involved in the division that occurred in the 1950s and 1960s over churches supporting or operating organizations (institutions) separate from the church. There are also some other related problems, like church benevolence to those who are not Christians and “sponsoring churches.”

The Book of Enoch
In the series: Canon of Scripture

Found in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in a translation among an Ethiopian Jewish community, The Book of Enoch (1 Enoch) has claimed the interest of many in modern times. It seems to have been quoted by the book of Jude in the Bible, yet was not considered inspired by the Jews or Christians in general. In this lesson, we take a look at why we can be sure that the book is not inspired by God and was rightfully left out of the canon of Scripture.

In the series: Canon of Scripture

The Septuagint included some extra books in the Old Testament than what we have in our Bibles today. The Catholic Bibles do include these books and call them the Deuterocanonical books.

In this lesson, we look at why these books should be rejected from inclusion on the Bible based on the evidence that they are not inspired by God.

Basic Evidence
In the series: Canon of Scripture

What is the biblical canon and how was it formed? This video explores the concept of the canon of Scripture, explaining what it means to be an authoritative book in the Bible. We delve into the criteria used for acceptance, including prophetic authorship, confirmation through miracles and fulfilled prophecies, consistency with other inspired texts, and acceptance by the original recipients. We examine key passages from Deuteronomy and discuss the significance of Jesus’ affirmation of the Old Testament canon. We also explore questions about the authorship of books like Joshua, Psalms, Luke, and Hebrews. Finally, we clarify the role of the 4th-century councils in formally recognizing the canon, emphasizing that this wasn’t a new decision but a confirmation of existing acceptance.
